With two major highways, oil refining, port operations, and light manufacturing, Richmond residents have a long standing concern about local air quality.

In 2020, following passage of California Assembly Bill 617 and with support from the California Air Resources Board (CARB), the Bay Area Air Quality Management District initiated an Air Toxics Monitoring Study using air sampling instruments mounted in a van that regularly drove through North Richmond, the Refinery area, the 23rd St. Corridor, and the harbor area.

The air monitoring van detected higher than typical levels of different volatile organic compounds (VOCs) on numerous occasions throughout the area. Some VOCs are air toxics with significant health effects.

For this Thursday evening’s Neighborhood Council meeting we’ve invited a representative from the Air Quality Management District to provide an overview of the Air Toxics Study findings and the District’s programs to manage local air pollutants.
